Robert Downey, Jr. was born in Manhattan, New York on April 4, 1965. Downey Jr.’s father was an experimental film director who had his son play a sick puppy in the absurdist comedy Pound when he was just 5 years old. Downey Jr. would go on to act for his father in a series of underground films, and began studying classical ballet at the age of 10.

He made his acting debut at the age of five, playing a sick puppy in the absurdist comedy Pound (1970), and then at age seven appeared in thesurrealist Greaser’s Palace (1972). After a brief and unsuccessful stint on Saturday Night Live, Robert Downey Jr. broke out onto the big screen opposite James Spader in Tuff Turf, and as a bully in John Hughes’ modern classic Weird Science. For most of his career it was no secret that Robert Downey Jr. was battling a severe addiction to cocaine. Between 1996 and 2003, Robert Downey Jr. was arrested a number of times — once with an unloaded magnum, and another after trespassing and falling asleep in a neighbor’s bed. Downey’s time on the edge was also dotted with various stints in rehab and prison, most notably a year-long stay in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison.

Fully clean and sober, Robert Downey Jr. seemed ready to assume the mantle of leading man that once was preordained. In January 2001, Downey was scheduled to play the role of Hamlet in a Los Angeles stage production directed by Mel Gibson. His steady rise to the top included stellar performances in films like Gothika, George Clooney’s Goodnight, and Good Luck, the critically acclaimed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, A Scanner Darkly, A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, and Fur. Then, like the calm before the storm, Downey Jr. stole David Fincher’s epic Zodiac, officially signaling his return to mainstream Hollywood, and proving that he had the ability to stand tall opposite Hollywood’s best.

With all of the critical success Robert Downey, Jr., had experienced throughout his career, he had never appeared in a ”blockbuster” film. That changed in the summer of 2008 when Downey starred in two critically and commercially successful films, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. Iron Man was globally released between April 30 and May 3, 2008, grossing over $300 million in the United States and Canada and receiving rave reviews which cite Downey’s performance as a highlight of the film.

With the success of Iron Man (and its subsequent sequel), it was obvious that audiences were ready to put Robert Downey Jr.’s past behind him and embrace him as a modern hero. When Guy Ritchie released Sherlock Holmes with Downey Jr. in the title role, the film set several box office records and wound up as the eighth highest grossing film of 2009. Downey’s other commercial film release of 2010 was the comedy road film Due Date, was released in November 2010 and grossed over $211M worldwide, making it the 36^th highest grossing movie of 2010. Downey’s sole 2011 film credit was the sequel to the 2009 version of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which opened worldwide on December 16, 2011.

The combination of intelligent lightweight design and state-of-the-art hybrid technology imbues the BMW i8 Concept Spyder wîth genuine sports car performance, yet its fuel consumption is no higher than you would expect from a small car. Among the most eye-catching features of the BMW i8 Concept Spyder are the upward-swivelling, windowless doors and a range of purpose-oriented on-board equipment including electric kickboards stowed under a transparent tailgate. The sports car is based around the innovative LifeDrive architecture, itself underpinned by a lightweight modular construction and the use of high-quality high-tech materials.

The BMW i8 Concept Spyder is a plug-in hybrid powered by an eDrive drivetrain combining a high-performance electric motor and petrol combustion engine. The lithium-ion battery supplying the motor wîth power can be recharged in an extremely short space of time from any domestic power socket. Together, the car’s minimised weight, low centre of gravity and finely judged balance, coupled wîth a combined system output of up to 260 kW (354 hp), promise unbeatable dynamic capability, exceptional efficiency and unbridled driving pleasure.

Compared wîth the Coupe variant of the BMW i8 Concept, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder has a slightly shorter wheelbase and overall length. With its compact dimensions and distinctive exterior paintwork, the sports car exudes a feeling of dynamism before it so much as turns a wheel, while striking features of its design include upward-swivelling, windowless doors and a transparent glass panel at the rear.

The interior of the BMW i8 Concept Spyder is defined by three levels showcasing its various functions. As wîth the car’s body, the interlocking of surfaces and lines is also one of the stand-out features of the interior design. The outer layer frames the supporting structure, while the inner ‘comfort’ layer comprises seat surfaces and stowage compartments. The cockpit fills the third ‘technical’ layer, bringing together the instrument panel, §teering column and §teering wheel wîth the instrument cluster, central information display and control elements. The prominent driver focus of the cockpit and the low seating position, which adds further depth to the open-top two-seater’s credibility, are particularly eye-catching.

The Spyder’s interior is defined by a mixture of plastic, carbon and leather, wîth the off-white of the outer layer and the bold orange tone of the naturally tanned leather generating a sporting atmosphere rich in contrast.
